Bedford Borough Council have granted planning permission for the proposed brand new Cadet Centre at the former RAF Cardington site at Shortstown, Bedfordshire.
As well as the Cadet Centre the site that is being substantially redeveloped by Bellway Homes will contain new housing, retail outlets, police office, nursery, doctors surgery and school.
The new Cadet Centre will be built in the first phase of construction on the site and the new building has been designed following significant consultation with the staff and cadets of 134 (Bedford) Squadron Air Cadets.
Work on the state of the art Cadet Centre is due to commence in the spring of 2008 and completion of the project is expected in December 2008.

The design of the Cadet Centre takes into account architectural features from the original housing constructed in the 1920’s by the aviation company Shorts who built the Royal Airship Works at Cardington.
The new facility will contain classrooms, a parade hall, stores, a two lane indoor rifle range as well as offices for the Army Cadet Force and 134 (Bedford) Squadron Air Training Corps.
Flt Lt Mark Robinson the Commanding Officer of 134 (Bedford) Squadron said, “We are all looking forward to the completion of this exciting project. The new facility will allow us to provide even more activities to the young people of Bedford and surrounding areas.”
Currently the Squadron operates from temporary buildings in what had been
used as the RAF Cardington Station Headquarters. Despite the building being
under minimal maintenance due to temporary status of the building, the Cadets
have won for the last 4 years the best kept cadet premises award in East Anglia.
